Council seeks input into review of rural land use

The rules governing rural land use and subdivision are under review, and Tasman District Council wants the public to have their say on how our land would be best used.

This stage of the review is a community engagement programme which gives the residents of the District, as well as interest groups and associations, the opportunity to contribute to the direction of the review.

Over the last 15 years the Tasman District has experienced continuing pressure for subdivision and development, particularly residential development, in rural areas including land with high productive value.

The District’s rural land contains some of the most productive areas in the country. It is also one of the best places in the world to live. This poses challenges for the ways in which this valuable land is used.

As a result of these challenges the Council has embarked on a community engagement programme to obtain information about:

  ?  How rural housing rules could be changed to reflect demands from the rural community;
  ?  The value to be placed on productive land while managing demand for subdivision; and
  ?  How best to manage the effects of business activities in rural areas.

To assist the community to contribute to this process, the Council has developed printed and online material. This material includes a background paper and an issues and options discussion document.

The background paper explains some of the land use changes that have occurred in the district over the past 15 years and gives context to the challenges facing rural areas. The issues and options discussion document enables readers to comment on a number of key issues and to indicate preferences.

The consultation material is being supported by a series of public meetings. These meetings are being held throughout the District and will give the community an opportunity to discuss the issues and options with Council and each other.

Meetings in the Motueka ward will be held at Riwaka Hall on September 9th, with a public meeting from 7pm – 8.30pm; and at Ngatimoti Hall on September 11th, with a drop in session from 3pm to 5pm and a public meeting from 7pm – 8.30pm.

This is the beginning of a conversation and will not be the last opportunity for people to contribute. The feedback from this engagement programme will provide a basis for the development of draft planning proposals. The plan change process will provide further opportunities for people to contribute as it unfolds.

Public meetings and information sessions will take place throughout the District during September with the final date for feedback being 29 November 2013.
