Vision Motueka building on solid first year

February 2nd, 2013

After a solid start in 2012, the community development group Vision Motueka is preparing to deliver a set of initiatives and programmes this year that should help get Motueka moving.

Vision Motueka was established to help draw together progressive individuals and groups into projects that strengthen the community and work toward a long-term vision of a vibrant and resilient town.

Last year it began working on four projects:

  • A proposal for a community and visitor hub in a central town location
  • Creating a team and raising funds to paint a series of nine murals on shop walls, which will begin this month
  • Building a library of high-quality photos to promote Motueka on websites and public TV screens
  • Organising a series of events to celebrate Children's Day on the first weekend of March.

With all of these projects under way, and Vision Motueka now incorporated as a Charitable Trust, the trustees have agreed to support three further projects this year.

(1) Already under way and publicised is the development of resources - mainly simplified 'how to' documents - that will help community groups to organise themselves more effectively. The give guidance on such matters as forming a charitable trust, registering as a charity, managing financial accounts efficiently, and seeking funds from grants. They are also building a database of Motueka's community groups and their contacts.

(2) Also being established is the Motueka Music Network, which will be a website-based network that will promote music of all genres in Motueka, allow people to find music teachers who advertise their services, and organise and support music events. Details will be announced this month.

(3) An organising team is being assembled for the third new project, a civic event to celebrate volunteers through an afternoon team for community groups, with awards being presented to nominated local volunteers in various categories. It is expected that this will be a joint project between Vision Motueka and the Motueka Community Board.

All seven projects are managed by teams which generally comprise one or more Vision Motueka committee members and several non-members who offer their services to work on specific projects.

Vision Motueka's committee, called the 'seed group', meets on the third Thursday of each month, and invites anyone interested to attend and take part in planning discussions, with no expectations for people attending to join a project team.

However, the trustees are also keen to talk with anyone with ideas for making these projects better, and to involve as many community groups and 'visionary' people as possible in working toward a better town. If you want more information, browse Vision Motueka's website or phone David at .
