Fire volunteers make flower baskets a success

January 30th, 2012

One of Motueka's success stories for the summer holiday period has been the hanging flower baskets along much of the High Street retail strip, and special thanks are due to the voluntary members of the Motueka Rural Fire Brigade who watered the baskets.

Many visitors have noted how much brighter and cleaner Motueka has been this summer, a change which is largely due to the basket initiative organised by Our Town Motueka (OTM), along with shop owners and the volunteer waterers. It has been so successful that a repeat is planned for next year, hopefully with a funded automatic irrigation system.

When OTM first discussed the hanging basket project, they knew that watering was the key to their success, says one of the main organisers, Anita Newport.

"Michael Treanor, a staff member at Parkes Automotive, is also a voluntary member of the Motueka Rural Fire Brigade," says Anita, a co-owner of Parkes Automotive. "He offered to water the baskets three times a week so we could go ahead and put the baskets before taking on the massive project to irrigate High Street.

"Michael, his son Cody and Anthony Hawkes are all members of the Rural Fire Brigade and without their help, this project wouldn't have been possible. They've been watering our baskets since they were put up in late November.

"OTM would like to personally thank them and the Rural Fire Chief Collin Eggers for their help."

The next step for OTM's Design and Heritage Committee, which is responsible for the project, is to work through the possibility of irrigation for High Street. "This would mean that we can have our baskets every year and make the project bigger and better," says Anita.

If anybody has any information or could help with this, could they please contact Howie Timms at NBS in Motueka.
