Inlet boardwalk to be opened shortly

October 29th, 2012

The boardwalk connecting Link Park with York Park at the south-eastern corner of the enclosed Moutere Inlet will be officially opened on Saturday 17th November at 11.30am.

The boardwalk across the mudflats from Link Park, at the seaward end of Wharf Road, along with a short stretch of land path to York Park, completes the walkway around the inlet and marks the end of a long project by Keep Motueka Beautiful volunteers under project leader Bob Cooke.

The boardwalk was built over the past several weeks by volunteers using materials purchased for a total of around $40,000, nearly all of which was raised by local donations. The photo, right, was taken about two weeks ago.

The largest sums donated were from the Easton family, and representing them David Easton will cut the ribbon to open the structure.

After the official opening at the Link Park end, all officials and the general public will walk through to York Park for a BBQ lunch and refreshments put on by the Motueka Lioness Club, who have also raised funds for the boardwalk.

Vehicle parking will be on Talley's grassed corner, where there is ample room for vehicles. Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate the culmination of the project and a great new asset for Motueka walkers and recreational cyclists.

Today I had my first ride/walk across the new boardwalk - what an asset! On such a beautiful day as today the view was awesome. As I rode on towards York Park, I stopped to talk to Bob Cooke - working away on his own 'tidying' the shore area. What a living treasure Bob is - Motueka owes him a lot.

Visiting Mot and I will be enjoying the new walkway on the boardwalk before heading back to Wellington. Congratulations to the good volunteers lead by Bob. Thank you for your foresight and energy.
