Gardening for kids the focus of upcoming workshop

Teaching children the benefits of gardening for food is the focus of a workshop organised by Tasman District Council to be held at the Motueka Community Gardnes and Weka House on Friday July 27th.
The free workshop is aimed at teachers and parents who want help to sustain their school gardens, and to bring its learning opportunities into the classroom.
The ‘Kids Edible Gardens’ programme provides an opportunity to share and gather knowledge and resources through some hands-on activities, and will help to grow the programme in the Tasman region.
The Motueka Community Gardens have grown rapidly over the past two years to become a focal point for learning and practising vegetable gardening either through private allotments or communal work. An increading number of gardening workshops are planned for the public at the gardens.
Teachers and parents at the July 27th workshop will be actively involved in:
- Investigating the bigger picture of the garden
- Sharing their needs to keep gardens going in schools and bringing garden learning opportunities into the classroom programme
- Looking at soils, seed to seed cycle, companion planting, weeds, insects, plants, spacing, themes, composting, up-cycling, accessing information and resources
- Asking and learning whilst interacting with hands-on activities with a variety of experienced gardeners from the Motueka Community Gardens, Riverside and the Herb Society
- Visiting Greenwood Kindergarten's magic garden, wioth its espaliered orchard trees, various berries, vegetable, flower and herb edible gardens, plastic grow house, wormery, compost heaps and use of leaf litter
- An opportunity to investigate a variety of resources available, including 'Kitchen in a Box' with a nutrition adviser
- Questions and answers with Marlborough's Kerry Newsham and her experiences of how the Kids Edible Garden programme can work so differently in different schools
The workshop will take place between 9am - noon with morning tea provided. Please register interest this term to and a programme will be sent to you.
