Advice offered at 'going digital' TV meeting

August 26th, 2012

Motueka people needing advice on how to "go digital" with their TV viewing can get specific advice from the Local Community Advisor, Guy Burns, during a four-hour session next Wednesday at the Motueka library.

New Zealand television is going digital in stages, and everyone in Motueka who wants to watch television after 28 April 2013 will need the right set-top box or a television with Freeview built-in together with an aerial or satellite dish.

Digital television offers more channels, better pictures, and new features such as an electronic programming guide. You do not need a new television to go digital. Any set can be converted with the right equipment.

Guy Burns will be available for discussion and free advice at the library on Wednesday, August 29th, from 10.30am - 2.30pm.

The Government has launched a targeted assistance package to support those groups most likely to face technical and financial barriers in going digital. The package is available to those who aren't already watching digital television and are either:

  • aged 75 and over with a Community Services Card; or
  • recipients of a Veteran's Pension or Invalids' Benefit; or
  • former Veteran's Pension and Invalid's Benefit recipients who transferred to New Zealand Superannuation at age 65 or over.

Those eligible for the programme will receive a set-top box and the right aerial or satellite dish. The equipment will be installed and training will be provided, along with technical support for 12 months.

Everyone in Motueka and Tasman who qualify for the package will receive a letter from the Going Digital team by the end of October this year on how to take up the assistance. Anyone who fits the criteria above and doesn't receive a letter should check their address is up to date by calling Senior Services on (for people aged 65 and over) or Work and Income on .

For further details regarding the Targeted Assistance Package and a list of letter mailing dates go to: . Guy Burns can be contacted on 645 or .
