Godwits celebration to include waterfront art

An unofficial driftwood sculpture: 'Welcoming the Godwits 2012' will give us all the chance to be outdoor artists.

Motueka Arts Council will again manage an event of arts in conjunction with Welcoming the Godwits back from Alaska on Sunday 23 September from 10am to 1pm along Motueka Quay.

This replaces the set of events centred on Memorial Hall, which has been the format of the godwits celebration in recent years.

The event will start at The Old Wharf, where binoculars will be available for viewing the Godwits feeding out on the sand spit. The estuary theme will continue along Motueka Quay with artists displaying and at work.

Motueka is one of the few places where godwits can easily and safely be observed.

The event is about appreciating the birds, the estuary environment, and incorporating the creative aspect of people in the community so all can co-exist.

Motueka Quay to the Raumanuka Reserve (Kumaras) is a great walk and cycleway with the sand spit littered with the skeleton bones of the forest trees and washings of the sea floor.

From the old sewerage outfall to the Kumaras out on the sand spit, the public will be invited to create driftwood sculptures and build sand sculptures. This is a great place to make a sculpture and leave it for time and the elements to rearrange.

This is a free event with public participation encouraged.
