Families enjoy Sunflower Day at community gardens

November 21st, 2012

About 30 keen gardeners, including several families, celebrated what is effectively the start of the third year of operation of the Motueka Community Gardens on Sunday by planting over 100 sunflowers.

The same event last year resulted in a colourful harvest in late summer of tall, huge sunflowers along the boundary of the gardens and in vegetable plots.

Despite strong gusts of wind, one spattering of rain, and an accident with the water pipe feed, the 20cm high seedlings were bedded down, and the gardeners enjoyed a barbecue followed by a seedling swap of vegetable plants. Here are some photos taken at the event.
