Tasman 'no' vote kills off amalgamation proposal

April 21st, 2012
[by David Armstrong]

The almost 75% vote by Tasman District residents against the proposal to amalgamate the Nelson and Tasman councils has killed off any change in local government representation.

Preliminary results with most of the votes counted show that while about 56% of Nelson residents wanted amalgamation, a much larger majority of Tasman residents were against it. In order for amalgamation to proceed, it would have required a majority 'yes' vote in both districts.

The voting turnout was ordinary in Nelson, with just over 50% of registered voters giving their opinion. However, nearly two-thirds of Tasman residents placed their vote. This means that even with some further votes to count, it would be impossible for the Tasman vote outcome to alter.

So it looks like most Motueka ratepayers will be able to happily get back to business as usual - criticising the TDC for perceived overspending, inaction, excessive borrowing and high rates - without having to change the sights of their rifles. And the vociferous Tasman councillors, still safe in their jobs, will be able to go ahead with their no-amalgamation party celebrations.

We will bring you final results when they are available.

Good article David, but as the dust has yet to settle the proponents for amalgamation have not given up yet. Don't underestimate the powers at play.
