Community solutions the focus of public talk

November 20th, 2012

A Golden Bay expert in community planning will present a public talk in Motueka next week about how we can revitalise, reconnect and make resilient our communities using the best social and economic models available.

Laurence Boomert has decades of experience as a community organiser. He has years of thinking and writing about the new, local economics, and has been involved in action in many of the areas he addresses.

Laurence has been speaking at various centres around New Zealand on this topic, and now is bringing it back near home, to speak in Motueka.

His talk, to be held at the Community House in Decks Reserve on Tuesday, November 27th at 7pm, is titled "Community Solutions for Today".

The talk will include how citizens can:
?  use cooperatives and community currencies,
?  create employment by answering social needs,
?  strengthen and future-proof local businesses,
?  create healthier, happier homes and neighbourhoods,
?  prepare and make communities resilient for harder times,
?  be part of the peer-to-peer revolution that is sweeping the planet.

Laurence Boomert has a long history in contingency planning, green business development and community up solutions. In the 1990s he founded the 500-member Environmental Business Network.

He currently runs the Bank of Real Solutions, an online database of community can-do success stories. He was a co-publisher and writer for the book "Fleeing Vesuvius: Responding to the effects of economic and environmental collapse" published in 2011 by Living Economies with whom he is a board member.

Along the way he has done everything from being an organic farmer to a television presenter (on "Maggie's Garden Show") to founding a new political party. He serves on a variety of national and local trusts dedicated to sustainable living.
