Interpretative signs to be unveiled on the Ruby Coast

August 20th, 2012
[Press release]

Two new interpretative signs have been completed on the Ruby Coast, bringing a total of three uniformed signs linking the coast together. The two new signs will be unveiled at an event on Tuesday, August 28th.

The first was completed a year ago and is located in Tasman. The new signs have been developed and installed at the Mapua Wharf and Pine Hill Reserve in Ruby Bay.

The Wharf sign has been made possible through funding from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and the Lion Foundation and the Pine Hill sign has been funded by a grant from the Lion Foundation.

The signs have been researched, designed and constructed by local artists and designers, and tell the stories of the area. The Mapua Wharf sign speaks of the history and development of the historic buildings and activities at the Wharf as well as stories about the boats and people associated with them.

The Pine Hill Reserve sign shows stories about the early settlers to the area, the cutting of the road as well as geological information about the stones and ruby bay shore.

The signs also serve to give visitors useful information about the region, places and things of interest, via useful maps:

  • The geography and geology of the Ruby Bay,
  • History of the road construction on the bluffs,
  • Information on the native fauna and flora of the area,
  • Amenity information including walking, cycling and camping.

The Coastal Initiative Group have overseen the development of these signs with the Mapua and Districts Business Association managing the funds.

The unveilings will be on Tuesday 28th August. The first, at 2 pm will be at Mapua Wharf, by the Jellyfish Cafe and Nature Smoke; and the second at 2.45pm at Pine Hill Reserve in Ruby Bay. This will be followed by afternoon tea.
