Service and kai at the marae to commemorate Chch quake

February 20th, 2012

Te Awhina Marae will host a commemorative gathering and service on Wednesday evening February 22nd to acknowledge the people of Christchurch who suffered the deadly earthquake one year ago and the work by the Motueka community to help those escaping the terrible events.

Following the devastation of the earthquake in Christchurch on the 22nd February 2011 many communities opened their hearts and homes to those who chose to evacuate. For four weeks Te Awhina Marae became the focus for our whole community to provide practice support in terms of offering respite care, accommodation, food, clothing, health services, spiritual and emotional support.

Te Awhina Marae would like to acknowledge the community support and invite all volunteers, groups rostered for dinners, schools, churches, community and service groups, businesses, families and individuals who became part of those supporting those who came from Christchurch and those who remained in Christchurch, as well as those evacuees now residing in the Motueka area.

All attending are asked to be at the marae gates by 6.00pm so they can be formally welcome and acknowledged. Thereafter, starting at 6.15pm there will be an Interdenominational and Community Service in the meeting house, Turangapeke.

This will be followed at 7.00pm by shared kai. The marae asks all attending to bring a plate to share so everyone can join together for a community pot luck meal. Kai may be left on the tables in the dining room before the welcome.

"Let us join together to acknowledge our community response.
Let us join together to share lessons learnt.
Let us all join together to commemorate this tragic event."
