Workshop aims to build stronger neighbourhoods
July 18th, 2012
People interested in learning how to develop and put into action neighbourhood projects in a town like Motueka will be able to learn about the experiences of other towns at a workshop next month.
"The Power of Neighbourhoods" will be led by Jim Diers, who will bring his experience from decades of work in Seattle, United States, where his work has helped to generate thousands of self-help neighbourhood projects and community-driven plans.
It will be held at The Pavilion at Nelson's Trafalgar Centre on Monday 13th August from 12 noon to 2pm.
The free workshop is aimed at residents, funders, local and central government agencies, businesses, social services, schools, churches, community organisations and neighbourhood networks.
"Neighbourhoods can generate tremendous power when they come together as a community," Jim says. "They can influence the actions of government, developers, and other external forces.
"They can also mobilise their own assets - their passions, knowledge, skills and relationships - in support of caring communities, revitalised neighbourhoods, and a better world."
The workshop will focus on:
- Why neighbourhoods matter, especially why now, what connected and highly functioning neighbourhoods look like and what happens there.
- How what we all do, as residents and agencies, contribute to strong neighbourhoods.
- How we foster social well-being and connected communities - what works, what are then ingredients, enabling tools that make a difference.
The workshop is sponsored by the Nelson City Council, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, and Inspiring Communities. To register for the workshop, email or phone .
