Motueka to host brass band competitions

May 17th, 2012

Motueka will host a busy weekend of brass band competitions and community activities from May 26th, when six bands from Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast play and strut their stuff.

The 'top of the south' event is one of the highlights of the musical year for the Motueka District Brass Band, under the direction of conductor John Rimmer. It gives experienced band members as well as younger learning musicians to measure themselves alongside their equivalents in other provincial towns.

The weekend events will kick off on Saturday May 26th with a street march from Mears Haven in Greenwood Street, along Wilkinson Street to the Motueka i-Site Centre. The photo below shows the Motueka District Brass Band practising for this event.

During the afternoon the action moves to the High School auditorium, where soloists and ensembles, including some of New Zealand's champion players, will compete.

At 7pm on Saturday a concert at the High School will feature the ability of the six bands to entertain audiences. The entry cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth.

On Sunday morning, starting at 9.30am, the bands will perform their Hymn, Test Piece and Stage March in the traditional contest. This is a free event.

Then in the afternoon, from 1.30pm, the four younger bands will play in the association's first festival for Youth Bands. A gold coin donation would be appreciated.
