Motueka to host singing star Shona Laing

August 13th, 2012

Hotel Motueka has managed to attract one of New Zealand's most enduring singers, Shona Laing, to give a special performance in town on Saturday, August 25th.

As part of a brief tour of Nelson, Richmond and Motueka, Shona will perform two 45-minute sets at Hotel Motueka. Entry to the show is free. Shone will be staying with her hosts, Hotel managers Phil and Rebecca Hodges, during her three-event tour.

This is something of a coup for Phil and Rebecca, who saw Shona singing in a concert in Nelson recently and decided something similar would be a great night for Motueka people. They arranged not only their own night with her but also gigs in Nelson and Richmond to help make the occasion more affordable.

Shona an intelligent and hugely talented singer / song writer who became a household name in the 1970s with TV exposure on the show "New Faces" in 1972 with her best-known song "1905", dedicated to Henry Fonda. She finished second that year.

Shona was born 9th October 1955, a birthday she shares with the late John Lennon and Jackson Brown. Her debut album was "Whispering Afraid", recorded as a 16 year old high school student in 1972.

As a teenager she collected gold discs and RATA awards, and represented New Zealand twice at the Tokyo world song festival before relocating to the UK to be a member of Manfred Man's Earth Band for seven years.

Returning to New Zealand, she released more albums and extensively toured Australia. "Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" got to No 9 on the Australian charts. She also toured the USA with Erasure. Shona has a knew album titled "Pass the Whisper".
