Another king tide swamps Motueka Spit

January 13th, 2012
[by Shirley Frater]

A large tide with the big seas was washing over the Motueka Sandspit today. The driftwood teepee still stands, however, protected doubtless by the AB's flag, which has been there since the start of the World Cup.

Along at the Kumaras end, the king tide appears to have washed the spit away altogether, back to the small island. The tide is now coming right in from Tasman Bay to the walkway and in places has gone into the grass right beside the track. The spit has also been pushed back at this end. Where you once walked across the concrete outlet for say 10 metres to get to the spit, you now only have to walk 5 metres and you're there.
