New permanent exhibition opens at museum

October 12th, 2012

A new exhibition, titled The Fruit Garden of New Zealand, has opened at the Motueka District Museum, telling stories about the agricultural industry when produce was shipped to larger markets by water.

The exhibition, a permanent part of the museum's long-term refurbishment, was curated by Exhibition Designer and Facilitator Joanna Szczepanski, her second exhibition in the Nelson/Tasman region.

A large map of the coastline on the floor provides spatial and chronological orientation for visitors as they move across from the early 19th century to the 1950s.

With children gliding toy boats full of imaginary produce along the coastline, budding artists trying their hands at modernist landscape art, and self professed "scientific farmers" trying to outwit nature in the quiz, this space is packed with things to do as well as read and see.

The museum was closed for a period recently while the exhibition was installed, and is now open again at normal hours of 10am to 3pm on Tuesdays to Fridays.
