Magnificent in Motueka: talent discovered
November 6th, 2012
[Press release]
Motueka Memorial Hall on Saturday hosted the second heat in the 2012 Tasman's Got Talent regional search, with 23 acts on show and more more rising superstars discovered.
Six young females took to the stage in the junior solo category section with Richmond's Poppy Ford's Christmas-themed song and dance almost doing enough to get the judges nod.
But it was the standout performance by Motueka's favourite Safia Gower who reigned supreme with an a capella rendition of a classic Whitney Houston love ballad, transcribed into te reo verse, which had the pack auditorium wanting more.
The Duo section offered three quite different performances. Ben Berkett and Abby Carter danced up a storm with a jazzy jive number, Poppy Ford returned to stage with Maddison Connor for a pleasant duet, but it was the aerial acrobatic performance by Kyla Rayward and Maia Adams which was rather special. Silk fabric suspended from the rafters had the girls carry out a series of synchronised manoeuvres, at times 12 feet in the air.
Nine acts performed in the highly anticipated senior solo section. Lawrence Parry entertained with a mashed up hip hop dance, Isabella Wensley graced the stage with a fine ballet dance, and Brooke Carey, Geri-Leigh Stratford and Laquisha Edwards all performed original songs the three had written on the guitar.
But it was veteran performer Paul Bond who impressed the judges with a rustic ukulele number, complemented with home-grown lyrics about whitebaiting down the river.
Motueka High students representing New Era took out the group section with a well-coordinated and chorographic dance routine.
Performances from category winners from each heat are to be shared online for the online community to cast their vote on who they think should be crowned the inaugural TGT champion. Online voting through www.jamonline.co.nz/tasmansgottalent opens on Monday 12th November, and closes on Friday 23rd November.
Tasman's Got Talent concludes in Richmond this Saturday, where 24 acts eagerly await their five minutes of fame.
