Seminars offer free financial advice to individuals and businesses

March 6th, 2012

The Baptist Church is mounting two free public meetings offering financial advice next week for ordinary people and business advice for small business owners in Motueka.

The meetings arose when the Motueka Baptist Church invited Andrew L'Almont, business development manager for Baptist Savings, to speak at a Sunday service about how to conduct a financial health check on your own finances. As a result, the church decided it should also make his expertise freely available to other people as well.

Spokeswoman Liz Salt stresses that these are not investment seminars - such as those claiming to show how you can make money out of property or shares - but rather they are aimed at people who most likely don't have that kind of spare cash, to give them some bank-free tips on how to check that they've got their finances structured correctly.

At the back of the two meetings will be an information table highlighting the other helping agencies in town, such as Grey Power or the local budgeting services, so that if people feel the need they can pick up their brochures as well.

The first meeting, a Financial Health Check Seminar, will be held at the church in Greenwood Street on Tuesday March 13th at 7pm. Topics will include:

  • What is happening in the world of finance
  • Whether to fix or float your mortgage
  • How to restructure your mortgage to pay it off earlier
  • Which is the best bank for you and why
  • How to pay the lowest interest rate on your credit card
  • If you have the right insurances
  • Who you can trust, who will tell the truth.

The Business Seminar will be held on Thursday March 15th at 7pm at the Gothic Restaurant. Topics will include:

  • What do you do when you've done a great job but your clients are not paying
  • What you can do when your competition is doing 'cash jobs' and avoiding tax
  • What do you do when your bank says 'no' to your overdraft
  • Are you paying the right ACC levies
  • What role does social media play in your business
  • How do you generate more business
  • How do you get repeat business
