In-depth budgeting course open to all

July 5th, 2012

The Motueka Budget Advice service is offering a 10-week, in-depth course on budgeting for members of the public and those engaged in related community work.

The free course, which is likely to comprise weekly evening gatherings, is provided under the umbrella of the Family Service Centre and will be run by Sjors Brouwer.

It will include modules on how to 'work' a budget; what is a 'normal' budget; organising and paying utility bills; shopping for deals on things like insurance and utilities; good old 'scrooging'; prioritising, reducing, and avoiding debts; IRD and WINZ entitlements; and issues like Kiwisaver, child support, power of attorney, leasing and rates rebates.

Sjors says the course will be shaped to suit members of the public who want to improve their own finances, people who work (individually or as part of a community organisation) with clients in financial strife or who want to broaden their skills, and prospective new volunteers for Motueka Budget Advice.

Those attending can choose the level of commitment, including whether they want assignments or not, and the number of sessions they attend. Sjors says students can express their interest of becoming a budget advice volunteer after the course.

He is aiming to begin this month, and run on Tuesday evenings, 7-9, but the venue is yet to be decided. Those interested can get further information from Sjors at , and enrol by email or leaving message.
