Mountain bike trail atlas to be launched

May 2nd, 2012
[Press release]

A Nelson self-described mountain bike fanatic has published a book with maps and detailed descriptions of most of the Nelson Tasman resion's more than 100 mountain bike trails.

Everyone who rides a mountain bike in the Nelson Tasman region knows that the trails we have are world class, with a myriad of options for all skills and abilities. What has been hard to find out though is exactly where all the trails are, how to get to them, the exact route they take and advice on the skill level required to safely complete them.

Steve Newport decided that what was needed was a comprehensive book that mapped (via GPS) the majority of the Nelson Tasman region's trails and provided detailed descriptions on each. The result is his new book, Nelson/Tasman Mountain Bike Tracks.

Steve self-funded the printing of 150 of the books to test the market - and sold out before the launch date! Another print run has begun to keep up with the huge demand.

The book will be launched at The Sprig & Fern, Hardy Street, Nelson at 2.00pm on Sunday May 6th.

"I've been blown away by how much demand there is out there for the book," said Steve. "I've been GPS mapping the mountain bike trails in our region for years and thought that it was about time I found a way to share all that knowledge with everyone else who loves mountain biking.

"People often know their local tracks but haven't had the information needed to go and explore the huge number of amazing trails that are just on their doorstep. This book is like having a local come out and guide you on the ride - making sure you get there, get round and are well prepared."

Nelson City and Tasman District Councils have both been supportive, allowing Steve to use their 'Top of the South Maps' satellite imagery to overlay his GPS co-ordinates onto. The result is superbly detailed maps with very accurate trail directions that can be easily understood by anyone.

"I've tapped into our region's active mountain biking community, and the trail builders themselves, to make sure the descriptions are accurate and up-to-date," said Steve.

Nelson/Tasman Mountain Bike Tracks costs $29.95 and can be purchased from most local bike shops.
