Woodlands Canal cycle/footpath completed
March 2nd, 2012
[by David Armstrong]
After years of tricky underfoot conditions, cyclists and walkers are celebrating the completion of the gravelled path beside the Woodlands Canal linking Thorp Bush with the Recreation Centre.
The path, which is about 900m long and uniformly 2 metres wide, was constructed in very quick time. The gravel is already well packed down, and nearby foliage has been cut back to allow clear passage for cyclists.
The path is widely used as a safe and more scenic alternative to High Street for travel between the town centre and the Rec Centre hub, and on to the walkways around the Estuary Inlet, particularly for people living on the east side of town.
Although a reasonable though sometimes bumpy path during summer, in wet times it turned muddy, and cyclists had to try to keep their wheels in the worn rut.
Some on the Motueka Community Board had lobbied for the path to be sealed so that maintenance costs would be lower, but Council was unwilling to increase the funding to do this. The cost of the work now completed was about $24,000.
The building and sealing of the path was one of the top choices in a survey run last year to find how residents would prefer the local "small projects" rate be spent (see our story here), but a majority of community board members voted against this.
