'It's In The Bag' recorded in Motueka for Maori TV

January 30th, 2011

Maori Television's version of It's in the Bag, made famous by the late Selwyn Toogood during the 1950s, 60s and 70s, visited Motueka's Memorial Hall last Wednesday to test locals' knowledge of their town and record the television show, the Nelson Mail reported.

The show, hosted by Pio Terei and Stacey Morrison, is putting New Zealand's small towns on the map during a tour of the country. The updated show for Maori Television started out three years ago with prizes including sacks of kina and rewena bread, but those had since been replaced with cash and other large prizes.

Anna Pearson, reporting for the Nelson Mail, said the floor manager Rei Samuel set the scene for an entertaining evening by warning the audience about live television: "Nannies please keep your teeth in, mokopuna make sure your fingers are in your pocket not your nose and gentlemen make sure the lady [next to you] is the one you should be [sitting beside]."

Six people were selected from the audience after a current events quiz and then it was show time.

The Nelson Mail said that three questions including "Motueka is situated in which bay?" were fired at Charlene Dick and at the end of the round she happily settled for $200. Kevin Pouri-Lane took the money – $350. Ngarangi Marsh spoke in Maori, turned down $295.50 for the kete and won a whale-watching trip in Kaikoura for his family. He will also represent Motueka at the grand final in Porirua in June after beating Marcel Bluett in a final round face-off.
