The big snow comes to Motueka

July 25th, 2011

For those not living in the area, last night we had a lot of snow in Motueka and the surrounding area, especially up the Motueka Valley. It started snowing lightly in Motueka about 6pm Sunday night and there were people in the street playing in the snow and throwing snow balls. More fell during the night, and we all awoke to layers of white on the street and in gardens, and the view of snow dusting the nearby hills.

Long-timers said this was the most snow they'd seen in Motueka in their lifetime here. Shirley Frater, who sent in the first four photos taken around 10.30am, said she had never seen snow settle and stay in town, and it was still on her lawn at midday. One person said she knew the last time this happened was 35 years ago, on July 16th 1976, because it coincided with the birth of a family member.
