Unemployment in Motueka has doubled this winter
July 25th, 2011
Unemployment has doubled in Motueka since March, with the number of people on the dole in Motueka up from 91 at this time last year to 204 now, according to a report published in the Nelson Mail.
Work and Income said 908 workers in the Nelson Tasman region were receiving the unemployment benefit in June this year which is 324 more than at the same time last year. The number of people on the dole in Motueka risen from 91 since the March 2011 quarter.
Work and Income acting regional commissioner Lynne Williams told the Nelson Mail that in Motueka smaller numbers were required for seasonal work, more people were competing for jobs including some from Canterbury, and bad weather was affecting some businesses.
Nelson MP Nick Smith said the increase in unemployment in Motueka reflected the huge impact the pipfruit industry had on the town. "I am confident that over the next two years we will see the economy improving, but people who are looking for a quick fix will be disappointed."
