High School offers support for raising teenagers
May 8th, 2011
Motueka High School is setting up a Parent Support Group to help support parents and caregivers through what can be challenging times raising teenagers. The group is to be called TIPS, or Teen Info Parents Support.
Meeting about once a month, TIPS will cover various topics throughout the year and the school has enlisted a wealth of qualified speakers to help make sense of some of these important issues.
Topics for this year's meetings include Safe Partying, Drugs, Alcohol and Legal Highs, Study Skills and NCEA, Cyber Safety, Sexual Health, Raising Boys and Raising Girls. Over a cup of tea or coffee at the end of the night you have the opportunity to talk to other parents and feel supported (if you wish to stay).

Where possible these sessions will be free, or there will be a gold coin donation to cover speakers. On the nights that are to be held at the High School, the school hopes to be able to provide a free child minding service to Primary School children or pre-schoolers.
School principal Scott Haines says TIPS is a support group for parents, so teenage children of parents attending should not also attend. "However please be assured that many of these topics are discussed with our students throughout the year."
He adds, "There are a number of other topics we need to cover which have already been placed on the Agenda for next year. We would appreciate your input and feedback if there are other topics and speakers you would like us to cover next year. We hope TIPS will be well supported and that you will benefit from it."
