Aussie dog movie to show as SPCA fundraiser

November 24th, 2011

A hit movie about a legendary dog, Red Dog, in the Australian outback is coming to Motueka shortly in a fundraising performance for the SPCA.

Red Dog is based on the true story of a dog which unites a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his master. It has been a big hit in Australia and is full of real characters, Aussie humour and a very smart dog - plus some pretty impressive scenery.

Jacqui Taylor, who is manager of Our Town Motueka and an animal lover, says she heard about it from a friend in Perth, an ex-Motueka girl with the name Trewavas. "She doesn't even like dogs and she loved the movie." She was told that if you like Aussie humour, characters and smart dogs, this is the movie for you!

She chatted to John Bergman, the Dog Ranger, who encouraged her to approach the SPCA, who were very keen. "As State Cinema through Mark Wentworth has been responsible for a few local movie fundraisers, I asked him to let me know when the movie was released and if it would be available as a fundraiser.

"I thought it would be a great way to raise some dollars for SPCA, since the movie seem relevant, and with its release here just before Christmas, when pets are often puchased and/or neglected, it would be a good time to contribute to their cause.

"And yes, I am an animal lover, especially dogs, and I used to have a mad bearded collie called Mac."

Red Dog, the SPCA fundraiser, will screenon Thursday 8th December at State Cinema. Tickets at $15 are available from NBS (the event is supported by NBS, The Guardian and Blathwayt Print). The event starts at 7.00pm for an apertif, and the movie starts 7.30pm.
