Next protest bike ride is for flora and fauna
August 19th, 2011
The Motueka cyclists who recently rode up High Street to protest about oil and coal exploration and mining will be back on their bikes next Saturday, August 27th, to highlight the need to protect native flora and fauna.
The group, which is taking the name "The Renewables", hopes that following the two well-attended protests - the July cycle ride and the June "Hands Across the Sand" rally on the Motueka Quay, they will be able to run monthly pro-environment rallies.
The ride next Saturday will begin at noon from the back of Arcadia Organics and set out on a colourful and loud bike ride northward through town. They will make their way down Staple Street to the carpark at the start of the Raumanukas Reserve (The Kumaras) where they will plant some native shrubs.
They will then hear some short talks about coastal ecology, local birdlife, and learn more about the local environment. "Greater insight into what makes our environment special makes it easier to appreciate and protect," organisers sday. There will be a gold coin BBQ to finish off the day.
"Society needs to make a shift away from coal and oil, and look towards more sustainable and renewable energy sources. Please bring along your ideas and enthusiasm to help protect our planet."
