Countdown under way for Motueka TV to go digital

September 18th, 2011

It's time for Motueka people to start thinking about what they may need to do to prepare for the end of the good old analogue television system and the start of purely digital transmissions.

The analogue cut-off date for Motueka is April 2013 - that's just 18 months away, and the people in charge of the "Going Digital" information project are making themselves available for advice in this region.

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage's Team Community Advisor, Guy Burns, was in Motueka last week with his distinctively marked car, talking with people who may need assistance understanding what the change may mean to them - what existing equipment will still work and what new equipment may be needed.

Guy says around eight out of ten households in the area have already gone digital. Those which use Freeview or Sky services are already watching digital television. Benefits of the digital signal include crystal-clear picture, more channels, great sound, and an on-screen-TV guide.

Motueka residents don't need a new television set to watch digital TV, but will need a satellite set-top box and satellite dish, or a roof-based UHF aerial (aimed at the new Mount Campbell transmitter) and a UHF set-top box. This UHF set-top box is integrated into many newer TVs.

Guy says he is available to talk with locals about the changes, and to answer any questions. He can be contacted by phoning 645 or by email at . Further information can also be found at or by phoning .
