Upgrade for Kaiteriteri Road at last
November 17th, 2011
[from TDC's Newsline magazine]
The most dangerous section of the Riwaka- Kaiteriteri Road at Turners Bluff, is to be re-engineered over the next four to five months.
The 400-metre section of road, around the part of the carriageway which is currently narrowed due to a washout during recent heavy rain, will be re-aligned to flatten the corners and fill in a gully. Work will continue until late next March, with a two-month break over the Christmas-New Year holiday period when up to 10,000 vehicles can pass each day.
TDC says the work, resulting from a report in 2009 urging repairs soon, was estimated to cost $600,000. Council has managed to squeeze funds from NZTA to top up the required funds after its own emergency works drainage and minor improvements funds were exhausted.
The Motueka Community Board will be pleased with this news. At its November meeting the board heard in its chairman's report that "The Riwaka to Kaiteriteri Road must be the worst in Tasman District, allowing for the population it serves in Tapu Bay, Stephens Bay and Kaiteriteri ... as well as it being a major tourist route for the District. An upgrade has been programmed since 1999 but not acted on."
