i-SITE donation will smarten up southern roundabout
December 13th, 2011
[by David Armstrong]
A welcome donation by Motueka i-SITE will be used by Keep Motueka Beautiful to improve the landscape gardening within the High Street South roundabout, making the approach to Motueka more attractive.
i-SITE made the donation out of its revenue for the past year in recognition of work that Keep Motueka Beautiful does with its plantings and walkways to make the town more attractive to visitors and tourists.
KMB is talking with the contractors, Opus, and local plant nursery West Bank Natives to design the circular garden and plant it out with easy-to-maintain, low spreading plants. The design should be ready by mid-February and should be installed in autumn. It is likely to be modelled on the work done this year at the Three Brothers roundabout, where SH60 begins south of Richmond.
Those working to improve the streetscaping of Motueka are aware of the bland and occasionally untidy appearance of High Street from the roundabout up to Whakarewa Street, and this work may see the start of work up the street, which will include resurfacing next year as well as hopefully the undergrounding of the power lines along the street when money is available.
Preparation are also being made by Bob Cooke and Keep Motueka Beautiful to raise by 300mm the lowest 300-metre section of the Kumaras walkway where high tides are breaking over it. Up to about 360 cubic metres of fill from a subdivision is being deposited nearby and Bob expects to get on with spreading this fill in the new year.
Keep Motueka Beautiful is also pleased to announce that the Wharf Road shared walk/cycleway is now complete, and the committee are planning an opening ceremony about mid-February when people can walk the length of the path and enjoy a barbecue at Link Park at its eastern end.
