White Ribbon anti-violence campaign to visit Motueka
November 11th, 2011
Get Safe Motueka is preparing for White Ribbon day with plans to welcome motorbike riders from around the South Island at the museum forecourt with guest speakers, music, coffee and muffins on the High Street.
White Ribbon Day itself is on the 25th November. White Ribbon is a campaign led by men who condemn violence against women and take action. It is part of a global campaign committed to ending violence against women.
Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. In 2011 the campaign focus will be on two things: what men can do to change attitudes toward violence, and developing a narrative around positive male role models.
This year, the White Ribbon motorcycle ride is coming to Motueka on the 24th November, having ridden from Greymouth. The ride, organised by Families Commission, forms part of the White Ribbon Campaign to raise awareness of, and support for, local anti-violence initiatives, specifically ending violence towards women.
The ride will be led by the Patriots Defence Force Motorcycle Club. They are responsible for the safety of the ride, speaking to media and representing the riders at the community events. More details here
They aim to be outside the Museum at approximately 3.45pm and will provide family focused activities such as tug of war, games and a chance for children to sit on the bikes.
Prior to that, from 2pm onwards, Get Safe Motueka will provide be guest speakers, music, coffee and muffins on the High Street outside the Museum. They will be giving out ribbons and leaflets, and have part of a nationwide pledge banner which will be signed by people on the day here in Motueka, and then joined with other areas to form a national message against violence.
"Throughout the country, prominent public people are signing the banner and agreeing to become ambassadors for the cause," says Get Safe spokesperson Louise Wilkinson. "We would hope that you are able to join us for this campaign, and send a clear message that family violence is not okay."
