Floral potential shown in engineered photos

August 11th, 2011

A picture tells a thousand words, indeed. And doctored photos produced by Lisa Ball have given Motueka retailers a good idea of what High Street could look like if the hanging flower basket project goes ahead.

The proposal to beautify the retail area has been raised several times in recent years and members of Our Town Motueka have investigated the costs and potential problems. (See our recent story here).

The topic has again been aired this week on OTM's Facebook page following the photos placed there courtesy of Motueka's professional photographer Lisa Ball. She took the photos and then photoshopped them to include the baskets.

Facebook comments so far have included:

 - "WOW looks awesome, I tried it for a summer and spent every Monday morning picking them up off the footpath" (Astrolabe Fashions)
 - "We can't let the few idiots in the town ruin it for the rest of us though. The cameras will get them now. It's worth a try"
 - "Looks great - Wanganui do it well, perhaps check in with them to see how they have managed potential vandalism issues?"
 - "Excellent. The extra benefit would far outweigh the cost long term. Hope the Community Board can be persuaded to get behind it too. Don't let some minor vandalism stop a really worthwhile enterprise."
 - "It looks great, I look forward to Motueka's streets being brightened up for summer."

I am very much in favour of the idea of having hanging baskets in High Street. The local shopkeepers should be persuaded that they should take a financial stake as well as the Community Board. They will tend then to look after them better on a day-to-day basis.

I have always admired the main street in Nelson with their beautiful floral displays during the summer. I think it is someting that the locals and retailers would take a pride in, promoting Motueka. Great idea, I am all for it.
