$1659 raised for Christchurch as Terrors beat Demons at cricket
April 11th, 2011
The charity cricket match raised $1659 for the Christchurch Earthquake Red Cross Appeal yesterday as Howie Timms' Terrors beat Phil Donaldson's Demons on the High School pitch.
The match, which had been washed out on the scheduled day two weeks ago, was run yesterday thanks to the tireless work of Ian Bolton (Bolty) and the support of people including commentator Brent Maru of Sport Tasman (who thinks cricket is scored using points, not runs) and catering manager Jacqui Taylor of Our Town Motueka.
The Demons batted first, with David Ogilvie (who had to diet for a week to fit into his whites) and Phil Donaldson playing straight and true for several overs. Phil's Demons ground out 126 runs under 'golden oldies' rules which meant no LBWs and no-one going out before scoring at least one run.
Their top scorer was Bob Brereton who belted the ball about the paddock, and most entertaining was Bolty himself who played (and commentated on-pitch) with style to a close-in field. Crook knees meant Dave Neal was only interested in hitting boundaries, which was not easy given the deep boundaries and slow outfield.
After the BBQ lunch and coffee, the Terrors set out to attack the total. With your editor making a career-best of 17 runs and other top order batsmen including Damien O'Connor creating a solid base, it was left to a few in the middle order to belt out the remaining runs. Bruce Miller was easily the top scorer with 30 not out (forced retirement) including one massive six, and Terry Frater hooked the winning run with many overs to spare.
About $1200 was raised on the day, and this was topped up by $454 from Chris Auchinvole through his sponsored High School player. The crowd was not large but they enjoyed the picnic atmosphere and relaxing with friends and family, and Murray and Anna, the Guardian and Motueka Golden Bay News photographers, were kept busy.
