High School runs workshops for gifted primary students

April 8th, 2011

Motueka High School have expanded their annual workshop series for Year 7 and Year 8 "gifted and talented" students from surrounding primary schools, which began last week.

The increase in range of workshops is aimed at catering to the needs of a greater range of students, coordinator Sharon Beuke says.

"We are enjoying offering these workshops because as well as catering for students, they also enable our gifted and talented students to extend themselves, by mentoring and assisting others."

The programme are normally 2 hours long, averaging one per week until the end of July. Each one covers a different area of interest, and this year's programme includes dance, Waka Ama, news journalism, forensic science, debating, theatre sports, creative writing, making music, sports performance and microprocessors.

Different students attend different workshops, depending on their interests and talents. Normally up to two students from each school are able to attend.

Tutors running the workshops are specialists in their areas. They include Emily Tait, Josh Burrell, Greg O’Donnell, David Armstrong, Nick Wiffen, Lesley Paxton, John McFadgen, Lyall Carter, Robynne Jephson, Jan Trafford, Kelly Haines, Faith Jackson, Tony Aikenhead and Joachim Lang
