Firewood project again helps people in need

September 7th, 2011

A small group of men from local churches have been holding working bees on the grounds at St Peter Chanel Catholic Church to produce firewood for the needy in our community.

The team of men are Malcolm Garrett who is the driving force behind this project, Bill Nugent who is a keen helper and provides the truck for deliveries, Bill Wood who regularly pops down during the week to denail pallets, plus a few other local young men, but mainly retired folk who are keen to help.

Talley's have kindly supplied wooden pellets for this worthwhile cause. These used pallets, made of untreated timber, would otherwise be destroyed, so their use for firewood is a win-win situation.

The upkeep on the truck has cost approximately $1,000 and the pallets are sold for $6 each to help recoup costs.

The team of men have organised regular working bees to produce firewood for the needy both this year and last year. And, although, they have not received as much wood as they did last year, their efforts have greatly benefited many needy families in our community.

Last year the men, with the help of St Peter Chanel School's Vinnies group, used wood derived from orchard prunings produced by an ATET course teaching the use of chainsaws. This course has been discontinued due to funding being cut. (See our story here.)

If anyone would like to help these generous gents, a working bee is being held this Saturday, 10 September from 9.30am at St Peter Chanel Catholic Church. Please bring a crowbar/pinch bar and hammer!

Radio Rhema got hold of this story, and Malcolm completed a short interview with them today on the details of the programme, with the emphasis on the social conscience, and Christian action aspects, especially with reference to the youngsters on St Vincent de Paul helping out the "oldies".
