Yes, it was a scorcher - 33 degrees!

February 3rd, 2011
[by David Armstrong]

Motuekans endured one of the hotest days in recent years yesterday, February 2nd, when the temperature reached just over 33 degrees as a warm nor'wester, familiar to Christchurch people, blew over the ranges and fanned the Motueka plain.

Two people who have amateur (and therefore unofficial) weather stations at their properties said the temperature edged past 33 degrees between about 3pm and 6pm, and it was still around 26 degrees at 10pm. The maximum temperature reported for Nelson yesterday was 29 degrees.

Much of New Zealand experienced very hot conditions yesterday, with Gisborne reaching 36 degrees. This was due to warm winds arriving from Australia and being warmed further as they passed over the western ranges.

Yes, we had 33+ up here by the aerodrome. Have a meter that reads in a 10-meter radius from the house. Low humidity too, so it is HOT.

Hi from Perth Western Australia. Heat? It's all relative. I have a relative living in Motueka. So pleased you are getting the good weather. And keep growing those excellent hops. They are used to make some excellent beer over here and, of course, our weather in WA demands we drink lots of the amber fluid. BTW, high 30's heat plus high humidity is the killer. Without the humidity it is survivable.
