Final week for voting in KNZB "best town" award

November 29th

Online voting closes this Saturday, December 4th, for the Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) Best Town competition, and we are urging all residents and friends of Motueka to vote, and get their distant friends and family to vote, to maintain the 145-vote lead we held at the start of the week.

One hardy patriot took to the Sunday market yesterday (pictured right) with a sandwich board and 'how to vote' slips getting locals and tourists to vote.

Motueka is up against Pukekohe as one of the two finalists in the KNZB) Best Town competition. The winner will be determined by public voting via KNZB's website, and you can vote by clicking on this link, registering and picking Motueka.

From early on in the voting process, back near the start of November, Motueka has held a lead of between 50 and 200 votes, with each town gaining surges of counts at times. From this Monday morning the competition website is no longer showing the current counts, so we must all simply keep encouraging all our friends to vote. However, we do know that at the last display on Monday morning, we were 145 votes ahead.

The winning town gains a monetary prize of $3000 to be spent on improved town signage. The other benefits of winning would be "bragging rights" and national publicity for our town, which then would encourage visitors to holiday in the region and some people to come and live here.

Keep Motueka Beautiful works very hard to develop impressive walking tracks along the coast and around the estuary and inlet, and is about to work with the council on a new walkway beside Wharf Road. It has developed the Adopt-A-Plot estuary restoration project. It also operates the litter cart in the shopping area and is involved in many smaller projects around town to keep the urban environs looking neat and tidy.

KMB provided KNZB an excellent summary of the facts about Motueka, its population spread, climate and industries, which are presented on the competition website.
