'Boogie into Spring' to benefit St Johns Youth and Parish Caring Fund
August 26
Motueka St Johns Youth and the Motueka Uniting Parish Caring Fund will benefit from the proceeds of a 50s-70s dance at the Parish Hall on Saturday September 18th, where Christchurch four-piece band "Sentimental Journey" will reunite for a fun evening of dance, singing and perhaps some retro clothing.
The evening, titled "Boogie into Spring", will feature a programme of hit songs that people who were young during the 50s to 70s will know very well. They will include material from pop artists of the time including Elvis, the Everley Brothers, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Guy Mitchell, Nancy Sinatra, Ricky Nelson, Credence Clearwater Revival, Kenny Rodgers, Abba, the Monkees, and Roger Miller to name a few. All songs have a great dance beat and words everyone knows.
Sentimental Journey (photo right) played in Christchurch working mens clubs in recent years, specialising in that era of dance-beat music and using music backing which doesn't drown out conversation. Two of their members, Val and David, moved to Motueka recently so the band had to finish up, but the other two, Bryan and Marie, are visiting Motueka that weekend.
"We thought it would be great fun for us to get the voices going again for another gig, with the entry money going to a charity we are keen on, and just enjoy ourselves," says David. "We may forget the occasional harmony, or perhaps get some verses back to front, but the fun and the beat will still be there."
The Motueka Uniting Parish was very happy to make the hall available, and will provide supper. That date is also the night that the Old Time Dancing Group usually gets together, so some of the music will be aimed at the types of dances they enjoy most.
Tickets are by door sales and cost $10. Retro clothing is optional. Children will also be welcome - even they will know some of the songs. The hall is in High Street beside the Police station.
St Johns Youth have doubled in numbers this year, and their share of the proceeds will be put toward the purchase of uniforms. The Uniting Parish Caring Fund is used to provide emergency cash for people who find themselves in sudden financial difficulties.
