Jack Inglis a finalist in Kiwi Battler award

Motueka's Jack Inglis has won his way through to be one of five finalist for the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast region of the Kiwi Battler competition, and is asking all locals to support him and his work for the Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital by casting votes for him.

The competition is the work of ecopnomist and philanthropist Gareth Morgan, whose charitable trust will give prizemoney to people who are regarded as great kiwi battlers who do work for other people and communities. Jack is the finalist from Nelson/Tasman.

The Kiwibattler website says, "All around New Zealand there’s a special breed of Kiwi, going the extra mile, overcoming obstacles and achieving results – not for themselves, but for their communities. We call them Kiwi Battlers, and we want to reward New Zealand’s best – the Kiwis working the hardest and having the most positive impact on the lives of the people around them."

There are two prize money pots - one of $10,000 for the nominated charity of the winner's choice (in Jack's case, the hospital) and another $1000 for the winners themselves. The ultimate nation-wide winner will receive $20,000 and $2000 respectively.

Jack told Motueka Online that if he wins he will also give his own prizemoney to the Friendship Hospital, to make a total of $11,000 (or $22,000 if he topped the national vote) that would go to the hospital if enough people vote for him. He says that although the hospital is proving a great success in terms of satidfying a great need in Motueka, it still needs more money to add a further 20-bed wing costing $1.8 million in order for it to become financially self-sustaining, and the Kiwi Battler prizemoney would help that enormously.
