Fun dance brightens dreary wet evening
September 22nd, 2010
Last Friday night's "Boogie into Spring" may have been better named "Escape from Winter" as far as the weather was concerned, but the music was lively and the dancers busy as they raised $380 for St Johns Youth and the Uniting Parish Caring Fund.
Apart from the supper break, the dancing and singing was non-stop, as the ex-Christchurch band "Sentimental Journey" ran through over 40 popular hit songs from the fifties to the seventies. Most of those attending the event at the Uniting Parish Hall were up dancing and singing all evening to the rock and ballad classics.
Sentimental Journey comprises David and Val Armstrong, recent Motueka 'immigrants', and their ex-band friends Bryan and Marie Dobson, who were escaping Christchurch's quakes for a weekend away. They did the gig for nothing because they just wanted to get together again and have some fun. Bryan and Marie said they really enjoyed being in Motueka and experiencing the friendly response from locals.
Several of the dancers came up to the mikes to help with some songs, including for the Abba classic "Mama Mia". It was just a pity that the foul wet and cold weather deterred many people coming who otherwise would have enjoyed letting their hair down in the friendly atmosphere. Perhaps another time!?
