Motueka Online adds facility to link volunteers to groups
July 22nd
Volunteers are the lifeblood of communities of the size of Motueka, and Motueka Online has responded to suggestions by community groups to provide a way for volunteers and organisations to "find each other" though its Volunteer Exchange.
The new area, which is reached via the menu part-way down the left of the home page (or by clicking here), allows organisations to advertise for volunteers, stating explicitly what tasks it needs help with and what skills and time commitment it hopes for.
It also provides a way for people who would like to do some voluntary work in the community, but don't know which groups are offering which sorts of jobs or how to approach them, to advertise their availability.
As with everything else on this community site, the facility is free to use, and we trust that requesting groups will use it for specific needs rather than just to advertise their presence.
Another page within the Volunteer Exchange enables people to list products or services they would be happy to give away for the benefit of someone else (such as old tools, lawn mowing time, excess soil or vegetables), and other people to "ask around" for help with such products or services (such as "has anyone a 20ft ladder I can borrow for a week?").
As David Ogilvie, who has volunteered so much of his time for so long to Motueka, says: There is a "continual search for new, interested and dedicated people to administer, coach and help in any practical way. It is always refreshing when newcomers become involved with new ideas and new methods. The welcome mat extended is generous and extended. The benefits for all members are mutual.
"Amazingly, the numerous volunteer networks and systems work without fanfare and function remarkably smoothly. Even during a recession and despite the demands and constraints of family, work and time, volunteer groups make a significant contribution to our life.
"Motueka has a wonderful debt of gratitude to its own people for so much of what makes our district special - an independent, resourceful, vibrant and caring community."
Community Events page
Motueka Online today also added another new page - Community Events - which will provide a link on the main website menu to an area housing past and future information about those large once-a-year events that many in the community enjoy and look forward to.
Previously, these events such as the Festival of Lights and the A&P Show got hidden with a community group page while they were not on, or in news items that have long ago disappeared off the bottom of the news page, but now they will be readily available to see any time of the year. You can see the page here »

The content on the site is great David. A much needed and long overdue community resource. Good on you.
