Accessibility issues in Motueka being investigated

July 21st
[From Our Town Motueka's 'Streetline' newsletter]

The issue of accessible parking and shopping in Motueka is getting a fresh looking over as part of Tasman District Council's "Accessibility for All" forum.

Marion Edwin, a local ergonomist with an interest in accessible design, has joined the forum along with Tara Forde of the Motueka Community Board. With the encouragement of Our Town Motueka, they are keen to make Motueka a more accessible town, for the benefit of both retailers and citizens.

Initially under discussion is the provision of accessible carparking facilities around the region. A review has provided information to the group on some suggested changes to accessible carparking in Motueka.

Accessible carparks should be where they are useful, and must meet certain design criteria (as per the NZS 4121:2001 standard). If they meet the design criteria, the 'Universal Access' symbol can be displayed.

The Motueka sites being looked at are:

* Pah Street Library - accessible carpark reinstated.
* Decks Reserve - signage visibility improved.
* Wallace Street by the public toilets - another accessible carpark may be indicated here (at the rear of the I-site).
* High Street near WINZ - requires a kerb ramp.
* Motueka TDC Centre - the existing accessible carpark widened.

Marion and Tara will look into suggestions made, and as Marion is keen to ensure that she represents Motueka’s voice on these issues, she invites feedback from Our Town Motueka and community members. She is particularly interested in the comments from less able users. Please contact Marion on or email with feedback. Or simply click on the feedback comment link below this article.
