Need to boil reticulated water in Motueka
September 20th, 2010
Tasman District Council says that the 'boil water' notice issued last Friday, 17th September, to those households and businesses on town supply (reticulated) service in Motueka is to remain in force until further notice. This affect just over a thousand connections, and does not apply to households with their own wells and pumps.
Recent water testing of the Motueka Town Water (Reticulated) Supply has discovered the presence of low levels of E. coli in the water supplied. The announcement of the 'boil water' notice has been transmitted to Motueka residents through radio and websites, with Motueka Online being the first to announce it just minutes after it was sent.
TDC says it is still a precautionary move as the levels recorded are extremely low. Most alerts are triggered from units in high 100s and 1000s; these tests have found single digit results, 1 and 5.
Testing over the weekend confirmed that the source water at the bores (the source of the town supply) is clear, meaning the contamination is within the pipe system. Testing is ongoing to find the source, and people will be notified as soon as further information comes to hand. Motueka Online will endeavour to provide that notice as soon as it becomes available.
TDC still recommends to town water supply users that, as a precaution, households boil their drinking water until further notice. It is advised to boil all drinking water for at least one minute for the following: Drinking water, Food preparation, Utensil washing, Washing your teeth, Pets, Ice.
