Yesterday’s announcement from the Local Government Commission regarding the investigation into the possible union between Nelson City and the Tasman District is the first step in a process that all Tasman residents need to play a role, said Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne.

“In spite of requests from myself and Nelson Councillor Aldo Miccio to delay the process until after the election the Commission have begun the first of what could be a three stage process to measure support for the proposed union.

“In supporting an open and transparent process I am urging all residents to take this opportunity to contribute to the process. Regardless of whether people are for or against the union concept it is essential that they put their thoughts forward.

“This is definitely one of those situations where ‘she’ll be right’ will not get people the result they want. You will be invited by the Local Government Commission to contribute and I encourage you to participate.

“This will not be a quick process and we will endeavour to keep all Tasman people informed regarding the relevant information, timelines and processes throughout,” concluded Mayor Kempthorne.
