On why we should buy locally
July 29th, 2010
William Cleaverand Anne Marie Cleaver, Resurgence Riwaka Roasting Ltd
We are firm believers in supporting local and do so in every possible situation we can. We can understand if you can't get what you want from a local supplier, or if in the past that was the case but isn't now, or if it the 'not broke why bother fix it' attitude is with you. But really if what you want is a product of a reasonable standard, why buy from out of the area? To be able to supply your locals with a product that they can buy elsewhere is a great honour. To know that your hard earned effort and products is not only going to the locals but to visitors as well, is what makes my job worthwhile.
In my field there are 10 (roasted coffee bean) suppliers in the Nelson, Golden Bay region. In the CBD Motueka has 18 established businesses and outlets that can use or supply my product, yet we only supply three; six use Nelson-based and the the rest use outer region. So that's 84% use out of town suppliers and 67% of that uses the Nelson region.
Some business are on the market due to hard times and some have already closed because of this. I have also heard that if you are currently still operating in Mot and using local that your growth is still above level. This is the case with us, we continue to grow each month and have done so all through winter. Go figure.
But I ask you this - would you go to a restaurant in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington or even Nelson, and have a meal based on the products you can buy in your own town. I wouldn't; I would do as the Romans - when in Rome do as the Romans do. We will continue to do what we can to support Motueka and Riwaka but the reality of it is local support is where it's at.
