Closure of the Bus Stop Cafe, Riwaka

June 27th, 2011
William Cleaver

I write this out of frustration on the way we the community are treated unfairly by TDC and Transit. Yes another business has had to close its doors because of undue pressure and inconsistent and inconsiderate requirements applied to them simply to operate. The Bus Stop Cafe in Riwaka is OUT OF SERVICE.

The community are up in arms over this and we want him to continue to be able to operate in the area. Paul and his bus has been a godsend since our other takeaway outlet closed its doors in December last year. Riwaka Hotel provides good takeaway food but it's not the same as our chippie in the Bus.

A point of interest to us all is, if the Hotel can run and the garages and all other business in Riwaka, why can't Paul and the Bus Stop? This is not just one person venting off frustration, the community is ticked off.

Terrible news! Them kumara pies and kumara chips kept me going whilst I was out there. Get a petition going!

I totally support this move to keep The Bus Stop. Our visitors to this area loved the novelty of having fish n chips in the bus and I've used it many times. I am SO OVER this beauracracy nonsense.

Have the 'mandarins' at Transit and TDC really any commitment to local initiatives or can't they see any further than the confines of bureaucracy? Sadly it appears not. Perhaps they are 'frightened silly' of fresh country air. Or of people who can think for themselves!

I think TDC should be supporting us and persuading Transit to do something quickly about the safety of our High street and building a bypass to elevate the high volume of traffic which use it, instead of wasting energy on shutting down a great food outlet and putting 2 or more people out of work. TDC start working for your ratepayers beyond Richmond by being constructive, not destructive.....

This is all due to Transit I am afraid, not the TDC.

Is this not maybe a sort of tall poppy thing? In one hand we see we need to make Motueka more appealing to visitors, in the other hand the one thing that is a bit different and attracts people to it is not allowed to operate! Yes, I think Tasman district council should be having a say to have this food outlet operating, and not with the stupid only .. was it 30? cars allowed to stop there, though if I remember correctly it was a total of 30 in and out, so be 25! Does any other food, liquor or other outlet have this in its contract? I think not. Let us encourage people who are willing to put up time and $s for this sort of attraction.

I can't believe the authorities closed down BUS STOP CAFE. Great food and people and a great place to stop. I'm fed up and angry that the authorities around here seem to love their power and don't give a damn how they effect people. We want Bus Stop back but what the people want doesn't matter, it's all about stupid rules and regulations that are unreasonable, unnessesary. The people are powerless and democracy is a joke.
