An indoor pool in Motueka

I would like to find out if Tasman District Council have any plan to build an indoor pool in Motueka? With the growing population in Motueka, it would be really great to have our own indoor pool and it doesn't have to be as big as the Aquatic Centre in Richmond. There are so many therapeutic benefits from swimming or aqua exercises.

Ann, the Motueka Ratepayers have been asked on numerous occasions if they are prepared to pay for a pool and the majority have said no. I was not one of them. I feel a pool is a must for Motueka. It doesn't have to have a wave pool, or be as big as Richmond, just some lanes for swimming, and a spa pool. The benefits to the community would be immense from young swim club members to older theraputic spa pool users. So fingers crossed one day it will become a reality.

I understand that the Motueka High School plans to convert their pool to an indoor pool before long, and will be available for the community to use. Can any-one else verify this? I'm certainly looking forward to it. The pool has been available to the public in the summer months for lane swimming early in the morning. I went down this morning for a bit of exercise even though it was a bit chilly and to my dismay, it looks as if swimming is over for another season.

Motueka desperately needs an indoor pool. Swimming is an excellent exercise for all ages. There are parents of young children who spend a good deal of time (and cost) ferrying their children to swimming lessons in Richmond. (Very responsible.) There are people who are disabled - back, knee, hip, other - who would benefit from aqua-exercise both before and after operations, replacements etc - or for general exercise. In addition, an indoor pool provides a safe place for youngsters to meet and have fun at the same time. Tourists would also like to use a pool when staying in Motueka. Here's hoping!!

My opinion is that an indoor pool is a must!! With the rising costs of everything these days it has become way beyond our single income family budget to travel to Richmond now for valuable swimming lessons for my two young boys. At over $100 for a term of swimming lessons per child (one half hour session every week) plus the cost of fuel on top, it is one luxury this family has to do without!! Being that we are such a coastal town with both ocean and rivers around us I think it is vastly important for our young ones to learn to swim and the basics of water safety.
When past requests for a local pool were dashed by the negative responses I was highly frustrated and disappointed. I know of one such response which was "Well I'd never use it!". Well did that person think past his own personal use? He didn't think that his wife and daughter would, that his daughter's children would, that his daughter's children's friends and families would! Every single person that says "NO" must know someone that would so why deny those people?
A community pool would be a HUGE assest to the town and would in return create more jobs for the locals. Water safety is a high priority and this is something that definitely needs further discussions.
