Dangerous High Street / Tudor Street intersection

February 5th, 2010
By David Armstrong

It feels like an accident waiting to happen when I'm waiting in my car to turn right into Tudor Street. There is no room for north-bound traffic up High Street into the main part of town to pass me on the left but I have to wait until the south-bound way is clear to get off the road.

The queue builds up behind me. I keep waiting for someone to nose-to-tail someone stopped at the back of the queue. And it's further complicated by having the pedestrian crossing just ahead, making it hard sometimes to judge whether or not to make the right turn safely with other cars approaching on the other side.

The main problem, of course, is that the road narrows right there - outside The Moorings. This is certainly a nice attractive area, but it also makes the road there very unsafe. I don't know how major the road works would have to be to fix this, but it's worth looking into.

I totally agree its a nightmare ... it's not the only intersection in Motueka that needs attention. I purposely drive around the back roads so I can at least get on to the main road, because crossing over to turn right is a hazard. The traffic flow is often heavy on High Street and it can take up to ten minutes if you don`t get a gap.

All the intersections along High Street have an issue turning right. Another problem area is trying to turn right out of New World and the Warehouse on to High Street. The Tudor Street right hand turn into Motueka town is terrible!

So .. an idea I think might work .... While I was in England there were small metal round discs in the middle of the road etched into the road at road level to simply act as a guide for traffic ... like mini roundabouts, and they worked very well!

Only a person who is driving in heavy traffic can fully appreciate how well this works. The roundabouts are small but they are well marked on the road and with signage. I would like this set-up on the High/Greenwood/Pah St intersection in particular. I`m sure it would be cheaper than Traffic lights!! At least with a plan like this the vehicle on your left would have to give way to the person trying to turn right, which is more than they can do now!!

Traffic Lights would be better of course ... because it's a pain of a Town to drive around.
