Celebrate Conservation Week at Anchorage

August 27th, 2013

Nelson Tasman families are invited to join in on kayaking, sand sculpturing and other fun activities in a family fun day at beautiful Anchorage bay next month to celebrate Conservation Week.

The Department of Conservation and Sport Tasman fun day in Abel Tasman National Park is on Sunday 15 September. Abel Tasman Sea Kayaks will be there with double kayaks and guides to give families an introduction to sea kayaking, there will be a guided walk around Pitt Head, a sand sculpture competition and lots of other exciting activities to get involved in.

Families will be able to travel by boat between Kaiteriteri and Anchorage with Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles which is offering the trip for only $10 per person return.

Bookings for the trip and fun day can be made from 28 August with Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles at www.abeltasmanseashuttles.co.nz. Places are limited so people are encouraged to get in early to make a booking.

On the day, those taking part will need to be at Kaiteriteri ready to board the boat by 9am. The boat will get back to Kaiteriteri around 3.30pm.

Participants should bring a picnic lunch, a change of clothes for kayaking, a towel, sturdy shoes for walking and a torch for searching out critters in caves.

The fun day is being held to mark Conservation Week 2013, 8-15 September, which this year has the theme: 'Celebrate Conservation Week: What's your whanau doing?'

The theme aims to encourage young people and families from all walks of life to get involved in conservation and find out how they can help protect and enjoy our natural environment.

Department of Conservation Motueka Area Manager, Martin Rodd, says every New Zealand family has a stake in keeping nature flourishing well into the future.

"Conservation Week is all about celebrating the connection we have with our special places, plants and animals," says Martin.

More information about Conservation Week activities can be found on conservationweek.org.nz where pledges to undertake conservation activities can also be registered with a chance to win spot prizes and a trip for four to Great Barrier Island visit.
